Principal’s Perspective: Reflections at Year’s End

As we approach the close of the year and enter a sacred season observed in many different traditions, I have found myself pausing often—grateful, humbled and deeply inspired by the privilege of serving as acting principal of Emmanuel College. These past months have reminded me how firmly Emmanuel is anchored in its faith foundation and how vibrantly it lives out its mission of transformative theological education: education that serves the world through “inclusive practices of justice and care, contextual analysis, creativity and interfaith engagement.”
In this role, I have been blessed to meet with alumni, congregations, community partners and generous supporters. Each conversation has affirmed what I have long known: your dedication to theological education and to shaping thoughtful, compassionate leaders continues to strengthen Emmanuel’s purpose and the work we share.
This is a holy season in which many faiths honour the coming of light, wisdom and hope into our aching world. In these weeks, many Buddhists observe Bodhi Day, celebrating the Buddha’s awakening and the liberation possible for all beings. Christians celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus, and the revelation of divine love that enters the world in tenderness and courage. Muslims begin the month of Rajab and also honour Lailat al-Mi'raj, the Prophet’s ascension, a reminder of humanity’s potential for spiritual growth. In the northern hemisphere, the Earth itself teaches us through the winter solstice, the longest night, that the turning toward light is woven into creation’s very rhythm.
Jewish communities kindle the lights of Hanukkah, remembering deliverance and the promise of hope. I know this Hanukkah many hearts will be heavy, grieving the terrible attack in Australia, and the EC community mourns with those who were harmed and stands in heartfelt solidarity with all who feel shaken by this act of violence.
Amid a world marked by conflict, suffering and deep longing for healing, Emmanuel’s interfaith community shines as a beacon. It reminds us that wisdom is not singular but shared; that truth is enriched when we listen across traditions; and that our collective work becomes more faithful when we honour the many ways the sacred speaks. My hope for you in these holy days is that you encounter moments of stillness, clarity and peace; moments that ground you again in hope.
As my time as acting principal draws to a close, please accept my heartfelt gratitude for the encouragement, partnership and generosity you have extended to me. It has been a privilege to serve with you and to witness the depth of your care for Emmanuel and its future. I join the entire community in welcoming Principal HyeRan Kim-Cragg back in January, with anticipation of the vision and steadfast leadership she will offer in the months ahead.
May this season gift you with glimpses of the beauty at the heart of faith. May you find rest, renewal and joy. And may the coming year open for all of us a wider path toward justice, compassion and healing for the world.
— The Rev. Dr. Pamela McCarroll,
Acting Principal of Emmanuel College
